Commissioner's update for correctional employees: February 24, 2025
This content is a message to Correctional Service Canada (CSC) staff from CSC's Commissioner.
Our mission: The Correctional Service of Canada, as part of the criminal justice system and respecting the rule of law, contributes to public safety by actively encouraging and assisting offenders to become law-abiding citizens, while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane control.
Our core values: Respect, fairness, professionalism, inclusiveness, and accountability.
Pink Shirt Day
I hope many CSC employees will celebrate Pink Shirt Day on Wednesday, February 26. This day is dedicated to the fight against bullying.
We all aspire to a workplace free of violence, harassment, discrimination, and bullying and we all have a role in creating a culture where our values of professionalism, respect, fairness, inclusiveness, and accountability are at the forefront. Given the nature of our work, it is important that we promote and model respectful behaviour, particularly in challenging situations. When things get frustrating or difficult, not choosing bullying or conflict is a sign of strength. And Pink Shirt Day is a good time to reflect on how we treat one another and remember that respect and kindness are essential to a healthy workplace. Together, we can build a culture of inclusion and acceptance.
I encourage everyone who does not wear a uniform to wear pink on Wednesday. For uniformed staff, you can show your support by wearing pink outside of working hours.
Book Clubs for Inmates
As we continue to recognize initiatives throughout Black History Month, I want to emphasize that Book Clubs for Inmates (BCFI) is a key community partner of CSC. BCFI supports book clubs throughout most of our institutions and has a diverse range of books that can be made available to CSC’s libraries. As well, they offer the Children of Inmates Reading Program (ChIRP) which allows offenders to connect with their children through reading.
My thanks to each of you for the work you do and the strength you show every day.
Every job is a self-portrait of the person who did it. Autograph your work with excellence.
