Commissioner's update for correctional employees: June 23, 2025
This content is a message to Correctional Service Canada (CSC) staff from CSC's Commissioner.
Our mission: The Correctional Service of Canada, as part of the criminal justice system and respecting the rule of law, contributes to public safety by actively encouraging and assisting offenders to become law-abiding citizens, while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane control.
Our core values: Respect, fairness, professionalism, inclusiveness, and accountability.
National Public Service Week
It was great to see that many of you attended last week’s activities and events to celebrate National Public Service Week (NPSW). It is important to take the time to recognize our accomplishments and the incredible employees we have at CSC.
I also want to thank the NPSW Champions, and all the volunteers for organizing events to make CSC employees feel valued and appreciated.
CSC national headquarter recognition ceremony
It was also wonderful to see so many employees at the CSC NHQ Recognition Ceremony on Tuesday. I had the pleasure of presenting the following awards to staff:
- Corrections Exemplary Service Medal
- King Charles III Coronation medal
- Commissioner’s Commendation
- the Bill Staubi 2SLGBTQIA+ Leadership Award
- Long Service Awards
I want to congratulate all of those who received the award. You should be proud of your excellent work.
I also want to thank the Honourable Gary Anandasangaree, Minister of Public Safety, for being with us to celebrate our employees. My thanks to everyone who attended or watched the ceremony online.
Public Service Employee Survey results
Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the 2024 Public Service Employee Survey (PSES). The departmental results are now available and available through the link below. Results by sector and region will be released on July 15, 2025 and will help us better understand our results and identify next steps.
This year’s results, which follow our audit of culture released last year, make it clear that we have work to do in some key areas. CSC employees work in uniquely challenging environments and in a diversity of settings. The health and well-being of our employees, and their ability to feel psychologically safe at work, are among my top priorities.
A dedicated Culture Team was established in 2024 to develop a long-term approach to improve our workplaces. Employees from all departments and regions have been participating in a Culture Community of Practice, to inform the way forward through meaningful actions that directly respond to employees needs.
Opportunities have already been identified to leverage actions in other organizations and expand promising practices, like tailored support to address workplace trauma, promote resilience and foster inclusion. We are also working to enhance awareness of CSC Values and Ethics and conduct framework, to ensure expected behaviours are well-understood, and managers have guidance to quickly address misconduct.
CSC’s executive team is committed to leading the way in creating the conditions for meaningful change: renewing the focus on accountability, building a learning culture, and modeling ethical leadership. Our labour partners play an important role in CSC workplaces, and we look forward to further collaboration with all of them to promote a culture of inclusion and respect. Together, we can continue to build a safe, respectful, inclusive and healthy organization. Thank you for playing an active role in our efforts, we cannot do it without you.
Fête nationale du Québec
Tomorrow is Saint Jean-Baptiste Day. Quebecers and Francophones across Canada, myself included, will be coming together to show their pride by celebrating their culture and traditions. I would also like to recognize the important role Quebec has within CSC. Thank you to all CSC staff working across the province, for all everything that you do.
Bonne Fête nationale du Québec !
Work 2 Give helps Indigenous offenders give back to their communities
I want to highlight the Work 2 Give (W2G) initiative that allows federally sentenced Indigenous Peoples to create products for their communities. Since 2021, CSC has partnered with Movember and True North Aid to help provide Indigenous communities in need with products ranging from floating docks to tiny homes to ceremonial equipment and more.
The W2G initiative is an example of true reconciliation in action, while also supporting our mission of changing lives.
I would like to thank the dedicated CSC staff who have worked so hard to create this unique opportunity and to help it continue to thrive.

New “Prisons Inside/Out” Episode: Healthcare in Canada's prisons
The latest episode of our podcast, “Prisons Inside / Out,” is now available. Listen to the full episode at the link below:
CSC’s hard-working health professionals take us behind the scenes to give us a glimpse into what it’s like to provide health services to inmates in federal prisons across the country. CSC is mandated by law to provide essential health care to inmates which we know in turn contributes to safer prisons for our staff and safer communities for the public. Kudos to all healthcare professionals!
Thank you all for the work you do every day in service to Canadians.
Every job is a self-portrait of the person who did it. Autograph your work with excellence.
