Commissioner's update for correctional employees: July 7, 2025

This content is a message to Correctional Service Canada (CSC) staff from CSC's Commissioner.

Our mission: The Correctional Service of Canada, as part of the criminal justice system and respecting the rule of law, contributes to public safety by actively encouraging and assisting offenders to become law-abiding citizens, while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane control.

Our core values: Respect, fairness, professionalism, inclusiveness, and accountability.

Nunavut Day

On July 9, we come together to celebrate Nunavut Day — a day that recognizes Nunavut being established as an official territory. It is a powerful reminder of Canada’s commitment to advancing reconciliation, the recognition of Inuit self-determination, and the long-standing partnership between Canada and the people of Nunavut.

As we acknowledge the day, I am proud to share that Ontario Region will now be officially recognized as Ontario and Nunavut Region. This change highlights the important role Nunavut has within the Correctional Service of Canada, particularly with Inuit offenders. We currently have a parole office in Nunavut, staffed by one of CSC’s dedicated parole officers. Our Parole Office Supervisor in Nunavut plays an important role in meeting the needs of Inuit offenders, collaborating with territorial correctional authorities and fostering community partnerships.

I would like to specifically thank Parole Office Supervisor Marita Erkila for all of her hard work and leadership in the North.

Happy Nunavut Day!
