Commissioner's update for correctional employees: July 21, 2025
This content is a message to Correctional Service Canada (CSC) staff from CSC's Commissioner.
Our mission: The Correctional Service of Canada, as part of the criminal justice system and respecting the rule of law, contributes to public safety by actively encouraging and assisting offenders to become law-abiding citizens, while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane control.
Our core values: Respect, fairness, professionalism, inclusiveness, and accountability.
I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the assault of a correctional officer at Kent Institution in Agassiz, British Columbia. Our thoughts are with the officer, his family and colleagues. The Agassiz RCMP and the institution are investigating. CSC will review the circumstances of the incident and take appropriate measures to help prevent similar ones in the future.
While we are all grateful and relieved the officer is recovering, events like this can take a toll on our workplaces and on your individual wellbeing and safety. Thank you for being there for one another in times of need. And thank you for your dedication to our mission.
Severe weather events
As you may know, many communities across the country have been recently affected by forest fires, poor air quality, heat waves in many provinces, and flooding in Montreal.
I recognize that these events can cause stress and can have significant impacts on our staff. My thoughts are with those dealing with these environmental challenges. Currently, none of our institutions are directly affected.
Employees with Disabilities Support Network election
I wanted to highlight that we are looking for passionate leaders to serve in key roles within the Employees with Disabilities Support Network (EDSN). This is an opportunity for you to enhance workforce diversity, contribute to an inclusive workplace, and develop valuable leadership skills.
