Commissioner's update for correctional employees: August 5, 2025
This content is a message to Correctional Service Canada (CSC) staff from CSC's Commissioner.
Our mission: The Correctional Service of Canada, as part of the criminal justice system and respecting the rule of law, contributes to public safety by actively encouraging and assisting offenders to become law-abiding citizens, while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane control.
Our core values: Respect, fairness, professionalism, inclusiveness, and accountability.
As mentioned last week in one of my messages, a designated immigrant station (DIS) for high-risk detainees is now operational at CSC’s Regional Reception Centre (RRC) in Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines, Quebec. The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is operating this independently, in a closed space, separate from any inmates. Thank you to all of our staff who worked on the agreement with the CBSA – it involved a lot of collaboration and hard work.
I had the opportunity to visit the RRC and the DIS with the Honourable Gary Anandasangaree, Minister of Public Safety, and Erin O’Gorman, the CBSA President in early July. It was great to see the collaborative work being done with CBSA. We also took this opportunity to visit some of CSC’s facilities at Archambault Institution.
Minister Anandasangaree also wanted to see the important work you do first-hand. The pride and professionalism in what you do was very clear to him, along with your commitment and dedication. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedules to meet with us.
And thank you, as always, for your hard work and service.
2026 Ethnocultural Calendar
I am pleased to share that the Reintegration Services Division (RSD) has begun the development of the 2026 Ethnocultural Calendar. This year’s slogan is “Cultural Inspirations!”
To ensure the success of this initiative, RSD relies on the contributions of offenders and invites them to express themselves through their own artwork, poetry and recipes. RSD is requesting the help of institutional Social Program Officers, Ethnocultural Site Coordinators, and Community Parole Officers to communicate this opportunity to offenders and encourage them to submit their work.
Thank you for your continued support of the Ethnocultural Calendar. We could not do it without you.
Delegation Visit from the Singapore Prison Service
On July 17, the Keele Community Correctional Centre had the honour of welcoming a delegation from the Singapore Prison Service. The delegates also met virtually with officials from National Headquarters.
The visit focused on exchanging insights and best practices in corporate risk management, internal audit and evaluation, with the shared goal of fostering a strong risk management culture within our organizations.
Thank you to all CSC employees whose dedication and efforts contributed to the success of this visit.
New “Prisons Inside/Out” Episode: Inside Canada's Penitentiary Museum
Canada’s Penitentiary Museum’s 61st season is well underway.
In the latest episode of Prisons Inside / Out, we hear from CSC’s Curator Dave St. Onge about the museum and the history of corrections in Canada.
Housed within Cedarhedge, the former warden’s residence across the street from Kingston Penitentiary, the collection holds countless artefacts that tell our nation’s correctional history.
Want to see it for yourself? Plan your museum visit today!
National Peacekeepers Day
On August 9, we will recognize the remarkable contributions of Canadians who have dedicated themselves to peacekeeping missions around the world.
CSC employees have made important peacekeeping contributions to operations in Kosovo, Haiti, and Afghanistan. I am proud of the work they have done to advocate for peace and correctional reform around the world.
I encourage everyone to take the time to recognize these incredible efforts.
Every job is a self-portrait of the person who did it. Autograph your work with excellence.
