Commissioner's update for correctional employees: February 2, 2026
This content is a message to Correctional Service Canada (CSC) staff from CSC's Commissioner.
Our mission: The Correctional Service of Canada, as part of the criminal justice system and respecting the rule of law, contributes to public safety by actively encouraging and assisting offenders to become law-abiding citizens, while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane control.
Our core values: Respect, fairness, professionalism, inclusiveness, and accountability.
I want to begin by acknowledging that last week may have been difficult for many employees across the organization - particularly the affected employees - as we outlined our plans to meet our targets under the Comprehensive Expenditure Review (CER). I hope all employees who are impacted by the changes feel supported and had an opportunity to have at least some of their questions addressed. We will continue to keep you informed as we move through each step of this process.
I also want to express my sincere thanks to the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for their efforts to support employees through this transition. I would especially like to highlight the invaluable work of our EAP and CISM peers, who, once again, went above and beyond to support the mental health and wellbeing of their colleagues. Their dedication, compassion, and professionalism make a meaningful difference during challenging times, and I am deeply grateful for their continued commitment.
A reminder to all that the EAP program is there to support you, should you need it. If you see someone who is struggling, please help connect them with the program.
As noted, the CER Hub page has a number of informative resources and tools for employees on CER and workforce adjustment (WFA).
Some employees have expressed that they do not fully understand the WFA process. I encourage all employees to attend one of the virtual information sessions being offered by our human resources experts throughout February and March. These sessions are open to all employees, whether they are affected or not, and the dates and MS Teams links are listed on the CER Hub page.
30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring black brilliance across generations — From nation builders to tomorrow’s visionaries
As mentioned in my previous message, this February marks the 30th anniversary of Black History Month. It is a meaningful opportunity to recognize and celebrate the many contributions and achievements of Black Canadians and communities across the country. It is also a time to reflect on the progress that has been made, while acknowledging that important work continues. By learning from one another and supporting inclusive practices, we can all help foster positive change within our workplaces and our communities.
I encourage you to keep an eye out for Outlook calendar invitations to CSC’s events throughout the month!
