Commissioner's update for offenders and their families:
February 12, 2024
I wanted to send a special message this week about the resources available to support you. Over the past several weeks, there have been increased incidents of conflict. You can help manage conflict by remaining calm and having open dialogue to de-escalate situations. Talking things through with others is always the best approach, rather than resorting to violence.
Your health and safety are a priority. I want you to be aware that there have recently been serious incidents involving drugs laced with opioids and other toxic substances. These can be extremely dangerous and can lead to tragic consequences. Please be careful. Please also remember that there are treatments, supports and harm reduction services available to you through Health Services.
I also want to remind you how important it is to take care of your mental health year-round. The winter months can have a negative impact on us and increase feelings of loneliness. Remember, your mental health is just as important as your physical well-being. I encourage you to reach out to any staff member who can help get you connected. CSC’s Health Services are there to support you, providing a safe space to share and address your struggles.
Your social program officer can let you know about the activities and services that your site may be organizing. I believe that a positive way to focus your time and energy is to get involved.
Thank you for your ongoing collaboration. Please remember to apply the constructive skills you learn through different programs and interventions available to you.
