Commissioner's update for offenders and their families: September 9, 2024
Tomorrow is World Suicide Prevention Day. This year’s theme is “Changing the Narrative on Suicide.” This promotes awareness and reminds us to shift the way we think about suicide to better support people who are going through challenging times and to highlight the importance of suicide prevention.
I want to remind you that it is important to talk with someone when you are feeling troubled, overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, or suicidal. We have resources that you can access for help. Sometimes just talking to someone can be so helpful. At any time, you can reach out to a staff member to set up an appointment with a health professional.
September 12 is Official Languages Day, a time to promote Canada’s two official languages. CSC supports communication and access to services in both official languages, including supporting official language minority communities. Staff in bilingual areas are here to support you and respect your language preferences.
I also want to highlight a great educational initiative available in some of our institutions. A digital literacy program was launched to allow inmates to learn new digital skills. Over 75 micro-credential courses are available to the students through this computer program.
A few participants from Dorchester Penitentiary shared their experience. One said that he had never used a computer before and that it was “a big accomplishment’’ for him. Another shared that this program allowed him to earn certificates and learn new skills. “I am really proud of everything I have accomplished so far. This is the first time I have ever completed something that I have started, this is a big deal to me.’’

I encourage you to participate in educational programs available to you. I strongly believe that developing skills can help you with a successful rehabilitation and reintegration.
