Commissioner's update for offenders and their families: October 1, 2024

This content is a message to federal offenders and their families from Correctional Service Canada's (CSC's) Commissioner.

Yesterday was National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This was an opportunity to honour the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. It is also a time to remember the profound and painful history of these schools and the generational impact it has had, and continues to have, on Indigenous communities.

On Friday, we also recognize Sisters in Spirit Day. On this day, we honour the memory, lives and spirits of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people. This is also an important time to thank those who advocate for transformational change.

I recognize that these days may be a trigger and cause grief and trauma for some of you. If you need assistance, please reach out to an Elder or a CSC staff member.

CSC has a unique approach to supporting Indigenous offenders. CD 702 - Indigenous Offenders addresses Indigenous offenders’ specific needs. It outlines how we provide responsive interventions through continuous care.

We offer various programs, initiatives and resources to help Indigenous offenders achieve successful reintegration. Don’t hesitate to reach out to an Indigenous Parole Officer, Liaisons Officer, and Elder for support.

“To heal a nation, we must first heal the individuals, the families and the communities.”
- Art Solomon, Anishinaabe Elder
