Commissioner's update for offenders and their families: October 21, 2024

This content is a message to federal offenders and their families from Correctional Service Canada's (CSC's) Commissioner.

Late this summer, author Lawrence Hill visited Nova Institution for Women in the context of the Book Club for Inmates program.

I am pleased to share that over 100 people attended the event. Mr. Hill sat with members of the Nova Book Club for a Question & Answer session about his book, “The Book of Negroes.”

The women at the site, staff and members from key community groups had a chance to ask questions and share their thoughts. More than 150 copies of the book were handed out. Mr. Hill kindly signed each one and included a personalized message to the book club members.

I want to remind you that reading is a great way to learn, explore and expand your networks. We have book clubs across our institutions. They are a positive and social way to share your ideas and your opinions about what you are reading.

As you know, education is very important to me. I encourage you to set goals related to learning and reading. Find a topic that interests you, read about it, and write down three things you have learned.

If you are interested in joining a book club, please talk to your social program officer or someone from your case management team.
