Commissioner's update for offenders and their families: November 18, 2024

This content is a message to federal offenders and their families from Correctional Service Canada's (CSC's) Commissioner.

You may have heard that Canada Post began a national strike last Friday. This means that mail delivery will be impacted until the strike is over, and correspondence with your lawyer may be impacted or delayed. To stay connected with your loved ones, I encourage you to use the phones available to you as well as video visitations and in-person visitations.

On Wednesday, we celebrate Respect Day at CSC. This value is at the core of our organization. It has always been and will always be a priority for me and CSC.

It is important that everyone is respectful of each other. Respect can be listening to others, helping someone in need, treating everyone equally or celebrating our differences. Everyone deserves to be proud of, and respected for, who they are. Show kindness to others. It goes a long way.

Conflicts can happen, but not resorting to violence and showing respect can make a big difference to the outcome. I encourage you to be mindful and promote kindness to one another.

On October 29, the Annual Report of the Office of Correctional Investigator (OCI) was tabled in Parliament. CSC welcomed this report and its recommendations. Each year, it gives us the opportunity to work together to review and enhance the work we do in corrections.

The OCI is the ombuds for federally sentenced offenders. It provides independent, impartial, and timely investigations into complaints and concerns in the federal correctional system. If you are interested in reading this report and CSC’s response to it, please ask your case worker for a copy.

Treat people the way you want to be treated. Talk to people the way you want to be talked to. Everyone deserves respect.
