Commissioner's update for offenders and their families: December 9, 2024

This content is a message to federal offenders and their families from Correctional Service Canada's (CSC's) Commissioner.

I want to share with you an interesting social program from the Edmonton Institution for Women (EIFW). Since July 2023, residents from EIFW have been learning how to crochet while having discussions about social justice.

The “Basic Stitches – fibre arts and justice program” is a unique way to be creative. The women teach and support each other in learning a new skill while discussing topics like relationships and restorative justice. The participants aren’t just learning how to crochet or talking openly about important issues, but there is an actual blanket created by the end. Since the program started, over 100 residents have participated, creating over 200 blankets which have been donated to not-for-profit groups in the Edmonton area.

When the women are working together, any barriers between them dissolve as they focus on making blankets for mothers and babies in need.
