Commissioner's update for offenders and their families: January 6, 2025

This content is a message to federal offenders and their families from Correctional Service Canada's (CSC's) Commissioner.

I want to address the recent incidents of violence and remind everyone that acts of aggression affect not only those directly involved but everyone in our institutions. Violence creates unnecessary tension, prolongs conflicts, and may result in serious consequences that impact your progress. I want to be clear that assaults on our staff are unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

I ask each of you to approach conflicts with a focus on communication and respect. CSC staff are in our institutions to support, guide and assist you, and it is essential that you respect their role to maintain a safe and respectful environment for everyone.

The use of violence or a peaceful resolution is a choice and is reflected in your daily actions and words. Today, I challenge each of you to be a positive force.

January 4 was National Ribbon Skirt Day, an opportunity to raise awareness of and celebrate Indigenous culture, traditions, histories, and contributions to our country.

For centuries, ribbon skirts have been worn in ceremonies or at special events. They are an important part of Indigenous women’s identity and heritage, representing a person’s unique diversity and strength. This day is an important reminder of the need to combat discrimination and racism.

I hope that 2025 will be a safe, peaceful, and healthy year for you all.
