Commissioner's update for offenders and their families: March 24, 2025
Yesterday, Parliament was dissolved, and a federal election was called. You will have the opportunity to exercise your right to vote on April 16, 2025, by special ballot which is the 12th day before the general election on April 28, 2025.
Each institution has a liaison officer who will coordinate the registrations, organize polling stations and return all ballots to Elections Canada. If you have any questions, please contact the liaison officer at your institution who will assist you or direct you to other support at Elections Canada through their toll-free information line at 1-800-463-6868.
The month of March is cause for celebration as many of you are observing religious and cultural events. It is also a time of reflection and devotion.
- For Muslims, Ramadan is a time of fasting, prayer, and charitable giving where families and friends gather to devote themselves to their faith.
- Lent is observed by Christians in preparation of Easter. Many practice fasting and abstinence.
- Purim celebrates the resilience of the Jewish people.
- Hindu communities celebrated Holi, the Festival of Colours. This festival signifies the end of winter and the beginning of spring.
Chaplains are available to assist you in practicing your faith. I know that being away from family and friends can be difficult for some during these times. I encourage you to connect with your loved ones and your communities. I also invite you to give thanks, reflect, and participate in activities available to you.
No matter who you are, no matter what you did, no matter where you’ve come from, you can always change, become a better version of yourself.
