Commissioner's update for offenders and their families: April 28, 2025

This content is a message to federal offenders and their families from Correctional Service Canada's (CSC's) Commissioner.

National Volunteer Week is from April 27 to May 3. I want to remind you that volunteers dedicate their time to supporting you the best way they can to help build new skills, positive interactions, and community connections.

I also want to share that several of you recently submitted art and poetry to thank volunteers. The project is now available on CSC’s website if you want to encourage your family and friends to see it. If you would like a copy or to learn more about connecting with volunteers, please talk to your Social Program Officer or your case management team.

Did you know that every institution and parole office has a local Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) in place? CACs are community volunteers that have access to CSC’s regular operations and can provide advice from a community perspective. April 30 is CAC Appreciation Day. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the role of the CAC and how their works benefits institutions and parole offices.  It is also a good time to say thank you.

The measles virus is currently spreading in communities across Canada. Measles is a highly contagious virus that can infect anyone but can be especially dangerous for children and for individuals who have a weakened immune system. Measles can also spread even before people show any symptoms: that is part of why it is so contagious.

Infection rates in Canada are currently very low, so the risk to you right now is low. However, the best defence against getting measles is to be vaccinated. If you have had measles before or if you are up to date with your vaccines, you are protected. For those who are not immunized, I encourage you to get vaccinated so you can protect yourself and others from measles. CSC offers the vaccine through Health Services. To learn more about measles symptoms or the vaccine, speak with a member of your Health Services team.

Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow.
