Commissioner's update for offenders and their families: June 2, 2025
The month of June is National Indigenous History Month—a time for us to acknowledge the resilience, achievements, and accomplishments of Indigenous Peoples in Canada.
I encourage you to take the opportunity to speak with Elders, Indigenous staff, and others around you to learn about the culture and traditions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. This is a good way to learn more and connect.
To mark Canadian Environment Week (June 2 to 8), I wanted to spotlight a green initiative making a real impact at Stony Mountain Institution.
Since April 2024, the institution has been collecting food waste from its main kitchen to keep it out of the landfill. In just one year, they have kept over 36,500 kilograms or about 80,000 pounds of organic waste from ending up in the trash. That’s roughly the weight of a semi-truck and trailer!
The process is a team effort: green bins are filled daily by both staff and offenders, then picked up three times a week and taken to a local composting facility.
While the program takes dedication and effort, it’s running smoothly. Stony Mountain Institution is proud to contribute to CSC’s goal of diverting at least 75% of non-hazardous waste by 2030.
Thanks to everyone involved for making this initiative a success.
