Commissioner's update for offenders and their families: June 16, 2025

This content is a message to federal offenders and their families from Correctional Service Canada's (CSC's) Commissioner.

This month, as we celebrate Indigenous History Month, I would like to recognize the remarkable talent of Indigenous artists within our institutions, healing lodges, and communities. I have witnessed first-hand the positive impact art initiatives can have in healing journeys.

Being involved in art can provide a safe way to express emotions, reduce stress and promote relaxation. I also believe that it can boost self esteem and self-confidence by providing a sense of accomplishment. Art programs pay tribute to the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Indigenous Peoples and help to promote cultural understanding and healing.

To all the artists in our institutions, I encourage you to keep inspiring and healing through your incredible work.

On June 21, Canadians across the country celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day. This is an important opportunity to honour and learn about the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. It’s also a time to recognize the strength and resilience of our Indigenous staff who work in institutions across the country.
Together, we can foster a stronger relationship with Indigenous Peoples and communities.

Your past does not define your future. The skills you have—whether learned inside or out—are tools for building a better life, not just for yourself, but for others too. Use them to create, to uplift, and to transform.
