Commissioner's update for offenders and their families: September 8, 2025

This content is a message to federal offenders and their families from Correctional Service Canada's (CSC's) Commissioner.

World Suicide Prevention Day

September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day. On this day, let us pause and acknowledge a reality that touches everyone in our society, including our correctional institutions.

Mental health struggles are real, but they do not define your worth or your future. If you find yourself struggling, remember that asking for help is not a weakness, it is a sign of strength. You are not alone. CSC’s Health Services teams include mental health professionals at every institution who are trained to help. They are experienced in listening without judgment.

International Literacy Day

Today is International Literacy Day. Participating in literacy programs can help you discover new ideas and perspectives. It can help you set positive goals, build confidence and express yourself better. I believe they are great tools to prepare for rehabilitation and reintegration and can enhance work and social skills. With support from teachers, librarians, volunteers, and community partners, you can empower yourself through literacy.

Official Languages Day

On September 11, for Official Languages Day, we celebrate our two official languages: English and French. Know that whether you are interacting with staff or volunteers, your language preferences are valued and supported. CSC is conducting an evaluation to determine which institutions, parole offices and Community Correctional Centres should be required to provide services in English, French, or in both official languages.

I encourage you to communicate with your parole officer if you wish to review your language of choice during this exercise. The deadline to submit your update is June 30, 2026.

Language is the road map of a culture. It tells you where its people come from and where they are going.
