Commissioner's update for offenders and their families: September 29, 2025
You may have heard that Canada Post is currently on strike. As a result, mail will not be delivered to or picked up from the institution during this period. This may cause delays or disruptions in your correspondence with your lawyer and loved ones. To stay connected, please continue to use the phones available to you, as well as in-person and video visitations. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.
October is National Occupational Therapy (OT) Month. I encourage you to reflect on the important role OT can play in your rehabilitation and personal growth. Occupational therapy can support you in improving your daily life and managing challenges such as:
- pain, fatigue, or mobility issues through pacing strategies or mobility aids
- anxiety, trauma, or low motivation with coping skills
- forgetfulness or difficulty following instructions using checklists or step-by-step plans
Consider how OT might assist you during your incarceration or help prepare you for community living. Do not hesitate to seek more information with CSC Health Services’ occupational therapists. They are here to help guide and support you.
October 5 is World Teachers’ Day. It is an opportunity to express your gratitude to your teachers and celebrate the support they give you as you work to achieve your educational goals.
I would like to highlight one initiative CSC teachers have begun to bring into their classroom: the Offender Digital Education (ODE) initiative. This initiative offers computer assisted learning opportunities to help you complete courses toward your high school diploma and increase your employability skills. I invite you to take part in the ODE when it becomes available at your institution.
Finally, I want to acknowledge your dedication to furthering your education as part of your journey towards successful reintegration. Please take a moment to appreciate the hard work you have put in, and the commitment of your teachers who support you every step of the way.
Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.
