Commissioner's update for or offenders and their families: January 26, 2026
January 27 is Family Literacy Day. It is about more than reading and writing, it is about staying connected, building confidence, and investing in your future.
With support from our community partners, you can access:
Letter‑writing kits to help you stay in touch with your loved ones
Books and letters to help you connect with your children through stories and letters
Parent‑child activity sheets that make learning fun, even when you are apart
Improving your reading and writing skills can open doors. It can make daily life easier and help you prepare for the future. It is never too late to learn something new or strengthen what you already know. Every bit of practice matters.
Stronger literacy skills can help you:
Take part in programs and make progress in your Correctional Plan
Better understand forms, notices, and other information
Communicate more clearly with staff, family, and your community
Prepare for work, training, and life after release
Every step you take, no matter how small, builds confidence and gives you more options for the future. Your effort today can create positive opportunities for tomorrow.
To learn more, speak with your Social Program Officer (SPO) or a member of your case management team.
