Commissioner's update for offenders and their families: February 2, 2026
It is Black History Month. Every February, people across Canada celebrate Black History Month. It is a time to recognize, honour, and learn about the history, contributions, resilience, and cultural heritage of Black Canadians.
During this month, Canadians participate in events, educational activities, and cultural celebrations that highlight the vital role Black communities have played—and continue to play—in shaping Canada. Black History Month also serves to:
- Celebrate the achievements of Black Canadians in areas such as culture, science, activism, politics, and the arts.
- Learn about more than 400 years of Black history in Canada.
- Reflect about the ongoing impacts of racism.
- Support inclusion and understanding of Black Canadian communities.
Learning about the achievements of Black Canadians can inspire you and help you see your own potential. Many community members volunteer their time to support you, offer guidance and access to resources. Many sites offer Black-led initiatives organized with community partners. You can speak to your case management team for more information.
February is also Psychology Month. This is a time to recognize the important work psychologists do at CSC. They help you understand how you think, feel, and behave so you can improve your mental health. By working with a psychologist, you can learn to manage emotions and handle difficult situations in more positive ways. If you feel you might need their support, do not hesitate to contact Health Services. Mental health professionals are available to you. Remember, you are not alone. Ask your case management team for more information on how to get started.
“We need each other, and the sooner we learn that, the better for us all.”
