Commissioner's update for offenders and their families: February 16, 2026

This content is a message to federal offenders and their families from Correctional Service Canada's (CSC's) Commissioner.

February 15 was National Flag of Canada Day. This day reminds us why our national flag is important and marks the anniversary of the first time the red‑and‑white maple leaf flag was raised on Parliament Hill in 1965.

Our flag is a symbol that brings people together. You can see it flying at our institutions, on government buildings, and in communities across the country.

Pink Shirt Day is on Wednesday, February 25, 2026. This day reminds us to stand together against bullying, harm and violence. Bullying can hurt people in many ways, and it is important to think about how we treat one another.

You can play an important and positive role in preventing violence by contributing to a culture of respect, responsibility, and mutual accountability within our institutions. This includes choosing non‑violent ways to resolve conflict, such as walking away or seeking support from Elders, chaplains, peer mentors, or staff. You can also remain calm if you are in a conversation and tensions rise, and report safety concerns or warning signs before situations escalate.

Participation in programs focused on communication skills, emotional regulation, substance use, and personal responsibility contributes to safer living units. By modeling pro‑social behaviour, respecting differences, and taking ownership of your actions, we create a safer environment for everyone.

I encourage everyone to choose kindness, empathy and respect in your everyday actions.

We don’t have to agree on anything to be kind to one another.
