Joliette Institution is located in Joliette, Quebec, about 80 kilometres north of Montréal.

Joliette Institution for women has been operational since January 1997. It is a separate multi-level security institution.
In the fall of 2001, the Structured Living Environment (SLE) opened. The SLE provides a therapeutic, multidisciplinary approach for multiple security levels for female offenders with mental health problems. In 2015, two units were added in the context of the Intensive Intervention Strategy for Women in order to respond to the security and mental health needs of women who cannot be managed within the general population.
Joliette Institution is a stand-alone facility for women with multiple levels of security. There are living units for small groups of women inmates in minimum and medium security.
