Staff security
Every day at CSC, thousands of staff members manage a varied offender population. CSC has several measures in place to protect the safety and security of staff.
Protective clothing and equipment
Standard pieces of clothing and equipment are provided to keep staff safe on the job. These include:
Stab-resistant vests
These are mandatory for correctional officers and primary workers working in special handling units, structured intervention units, maximum- and medium security institutions, treatment centres, and secure units at women offender institutions.
Protective gloves
These are issued to all front-line correctional staff. This helps reduce the risk of cuts and bodily fluids being transferred while searches are conducted.
Handcuffs
These are carried by all correctional officers who have direct interactions with inmates.
Inflammatory spray
This is carried by correctional officers who work in maximum- and medium security institutions, structured intervention units, treatment centers and secure units at women offender institutions.
CPR mask
This is used during first aid responses. It is carried by all correctional officers or any staff required and trained to deliver first aid as part of their duties.
Training
CSC staff members are trained and certified or re-certified on many security procedures. These include:
- use of force
- first Aid/CPR
- negotiation strategies
- firearms and surveillance
They are also trained in matters relating to:
- crisis intervention and conflict management
- workplace hazards
- harassment / cultural / family violence awareness
- suicide and self-injurious behaviours
- case management processes
National monitoring centre
The National Monitoring Centre (NMC) is in the National Capital Region. It provides 24/7 support to institutions, community staff, members of the public and offenders. During business hours the NMC monitors the safety of community staff members and reports security incidents. After-hours, in addition to these duties it provides emergency case management and intervention and completes victim notifications. The (NMC) also runs a tip line and offers bilingual services on a 24/7 basis.
