I am a corrections officer and specifically I do escorts. I take inmates out for medical appointments or any other appointments that need to be done out in the community.

Hi, I'm Brittany.

A typical day for myself as an escort officer, I get to work just after 6 a.m. We do our morning briefing. I then go and get my paperwork so that's when I find out how many escorts I have to do, who I'm taking, where I'm going. Usually it's anywhere from two to three. They could change my post at any given moment. There are some times where I might be covering for other people while still doing my escorts. If people need breaks or if they get called to meetings or if an emergency happens, you have to stop what you're doing and run to deal with whatever that incident is. I have always wanted to be in something within the criminal justice system and I like that everything's different. You never know what's going to happen any given day. So you don't know what you're going into, which is nice.

We drive this vehicle, usually goes in through the sally port. That's where we'll pick them up. Then we come out. We'll go to the hospital, we might go to the pain clinic, we could go see a gynecologist, family doctors, ENTs, dentists. All those things.

Sometimes you also have escorts that are emergency escorts. So those are after hours to go to the hospital or something, or they could even be weekend appointments. I quite enjoy it. I like medical things, so it made that easier. And then I'm comfortable with my position and as well as all of my partners. So we work really well together. There's always two of us that are going out for your medium and your maximum security. So you always have somebody to bounce ideas and stuff off of.

I would say my favorite part about my job is doing escorts and just being able to see even just the slightest change in one of the federally incarcerated women. It doesn't have to be a big change, but even if it's just a small one, it's always nice to see those.

I do have a pretty good working relationship with most of the women that I have on my caseload. So being able to have open, honest conversations with them so that they feel comfortable talking to me. And then I feel comfortable just giving them my honest feedback, whether they take it or not, a whole other story. But that conversation is always good.

I am proud of my job. Being able to serve and kind of protect the community when I go out on escorts and keep everybody safe definitely is good. Feels good.
