Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy 2014-2015
Although CSC is not legally bound by the Federal Sustainable Development Act (FSDA) and therefore is not required to develop a departmental Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS), CSC has implemented its own Sustainable Development Strategy for the 2012-15 period. CSC's SDS 2012-2015 contains 18 specific commitments/targets.
The main accomplishments in 2014-15 include the following:
- Alternatives to the use of polystyrene food containers were implemented by some institutional food services. However, additional waste reduction initiatives would have been required in order to fully meet the spirit of this commitment (SDS target 2.5 was partially achieved);
- All large boilers located in Central Heating Plants have been optimized during this period (SDS target 3.2 was achieved);
- Based on the CSC report for energy use and GHG emissions for 2013-14, it appears that CSC will most likely surpass the 3% energy reduction target relative to the reference year 2009-10. The final report will be available by December 2015 (SDS target 4.1 will most likely be achieved);
- Two solar hot water projects were completed at Dorchester Penitentiary and Bath Institution and five geothermal projects for heating new units at Nova, Atlantic and Springhill Institutions were implemented (SDS target 4.2 was achieved);
- The final fifth energy audit was completed during this period (SDS target 4.3 was achieved);
- An additional remediation project has been completed at Collins Bay Institution (SDS target 7.2 was surpassed);
- As per the Federal Contaminated Sites Action Plan (FSCAP), CSC provided a status report on the contaminated sites located on its properties undergoing a remediation project or those being risk managed as per the implementation strategy 3.11.1 of the Federal Sustainable Development Strategy 2013 to 2016.
In summary, during the 2012-2015 SDS cycle, of the 18 commitments/targets, CSC has achieved 17 and partially achieved one. Additionally, CSC has once more prepared its own SDS for the period of 2015-2018 and will continue to annually report progress made against the new set of specific commitments/targets.
