End of lockdown and exceptional search at Grand Valley Institution

News release

November 20, 2020 – Kitchener, Ontario – Correctional Service Canada

The lockdown put in place at Grand Valley Institution on November 16, 2020 has ended and an exceptional search has been completed. The institution has resumed its normal operations.

A number of unauthorized items were found during the exceptional search including small quantities of drugs, drug paraphernalia, and tattoo paraphernalia.

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is strengthening measures to prevent the entry of contraband into its institutions in order to ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone. CSC also works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to have contraband brought into correctional institutions.

Visits to the Institution have resumed for Friday, November 20.

While there are currently no cases of COVID-19 among inmates at Grand Valley Institution, due to high rates of community transmission, starting on Saturday November 21, Grand Valley Institution will be closed for visits. This is a preventative measure following advice from the public health authority.  This measure will be reassessed on an ongoing basis.
