Death of an inmate from Springhill Institution

May 7, 2026– Springhill, Nova Scotia – Correctional Service Canada

On May 5, 2026, Darren Bonenfant, an inmate from Springhill Institution, died while in our custody.

At the time of death, the inmate was 43 and had been serving a sentence of 2 years, since January 29, 2026.

The inmate’s next of kin have been notified.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will review the circumstances. CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.
