Services, interventions and activities for ethnocultural offenders
CSC's Ethnocultural Services is responsible for:
- Supporting offenders with their efforts to form multicultural associations that will meet their cultural needs and interests.
- Developing ethnocultural-specific initiatives, policies, and projects. Done in collaboration with CSC sectors, departments, advisory committees, jurisdictions and agencies.
- Creating partnerships with, and encouraging, ethnocultural communities and professionals to deliver ethnocultural-specific initiatives inside institutions and in communities.
- Supporting ethnocultural inmates with training and mentoring.
- Providing interpretation services for offenders who communicate fluently in a language other than French or English.
- Identifying employees able to help with interpretation for offenders during incarceration.
- Providing information in an array of non-official languages to help offenders, their families, and others.
- Facilitating or organizing cultural awareness activities to highlight significant dates. An example of these dates are:
- Black History Month
- International Day for the Elimination of Racism
- Asian Heritage Month
These services, activities and initiatives help to ensure that the specific needs and cultural interests of ethnocultural offenders are identified and met. This helps to contribute to their successful reintegration while enhancing public safety.
