Restorative Justice Week
Restorative Justice Week has been recognized every year during the third week of November since 1996. It is an opportunity to:
- reflect on how restorative justice can be applied to daily challenges
- highlight and discuss the most recent achievements of restorative justice in Canada
- raise awareness on restorative justice, its values and its principles
- contribute to social change
National Restorative Justice Symposium
On November 17 and 18, 2025, the International Institute for Restorative Practices, with the support of the National Restorative Justice Symposium Planning Committee, will host the 20th anniversary symposium, the first being held in 2005 at Parliament in Ottawa. This year, we will be celebrating the past, the present and the future of Restorative Justice in Canada. The annual event creates a space nationally for the sharing of innovative approaches. It promotes the use of restorative justice to address crime and conflict. It gathers individuals from diverse professional backgrounds, including:
- practitioners
- educators
- academics and researchers
- community members
- advocates
- policy and lawmakers
- stakeholders and other experts
This year’s theme is: Celebrating Progress. Shaping the future. For more information:
Engage your community
Restorative Justice Week is a great opportunity to raise awareness of this approach to justice. You can help by:
- Organizing a book or film club featuring restorative justice-themed works, followed by a discussion, and promote it through social media, posters, local media, or your community's website
- Inviting politicians, Indigenous and spiritual leaders, chief of police and other community leaders to speak about how restorative justice strengthens the community and different ways to apply it throughout our society and systems
- Encouraging your city council to proclaim Restorative Justice Week with a countdown
- Collaborating with libraries to set up restorative justice-themed displays and host storytelling events
- Volunteering for and/or donating to a registered Canadian charity that supports restorative justice
