DRDC overview
Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) is Canada's science, technology and innovation leader, trusted advisor, collaborative partner, and knowledge integrator for defence and security. We develop and deliver new technical solutions and advice to the Department of National Defence, the Canadian Armed Forces, other federal departments, and the safety and security community. We also work with partners in academia, government and industry and with Canada’s allies.
What we do
DRDC’s science and technology innovation investments focus on eight strategic focus areas in the Defence and Security Science and Technology program. We also have strong, specialized R&D expertise across multiple research centres and directorates nationwide, each contributing unique knowledge and capabilities.
How we do it
Partnerships are at the core of DRDC’s success in delivering S&T solutions to the CAF, DND, and public safety and security communities.
Strategic partnerships with industry, academia, allied nations, and government science organizations broaden access to expertise, infrastructure, and novel technologies, and a strong defence innovation ecosystem helps Canada remain competitive, strengthens national security, and accelerates capability development.
Collaborate with DRDC
Collaboration drives stronger, more effective innovation. At CANSEC, visit us at the Government of Canada Pavilion to:
- Understand how to partner on defence research:
DRDC is developing new engagement methods to build mutually beneficial partnerships and strengthen existing ones.
- Explore defence research contract opportunities:
Opportunities are posted on Public Services and Procurement Canada’s (PSPC) CanadaBuys website.
- Learn how to solve real defence challenges through IDEaS:
The Innovation for Defence Excellence and Security (IDEaS) Program provides funding to help advance your R&D while addressing challenges faced by the Canadian Armed Forces.
- How to collaborate through the Canadian Safety and Security Program (CSSP)
The Canadian Safety and Security Program (CSSP) supports collaborative research and development that addresses complex safety and security challenges of national interest. Through CSSP, partners can work with DRDC to co‑develop solutions that strengthen Canada’s preparedness, resilience, and response across defence and public safety domains.
Supporting innovation through collaboration
Security, Sovereignty and Prosperity: Canada’s Defence Industrial Strategy sets a new direction for how Canada will develop and sustain the capabilities it needs to protect Canadians and support its allies and partners. DRDC is committed to working with industry partners and allies, and funding S&T to help modernize how the Government of Canada delivers defence and national security innovation by:
- Investing in priority S&T areas
DRDC is leading S&T investments for eight priority areas to support NORAD modernization and continental defence, which will strengthen collaboration with Canada’s allies and encourage Canadian innovators to develop new defence solutions. - Advancing Canada’s innovation ecosystem
DRDC is leading early development of the Bureau of Research, Engineering and Advanced Leadership in Innovation and Science (BOREALIS). BOREALIS aims to better connect Canada’s innovation programs and partners, helping accelerate the development and adoption of high potential technologies to meet Canada’s defence and security needs.
