Notice of Intent to Impose Countermeasures in Response to United States Tariffs on Canadian Goods
Current status: Closed
As announced on March 4, 2025, and in response to unjustified U.S. tariffs, the federal government imposed 25 per cent tariffs on goods worth $30 billion and initiated consultations on an additional list of goods. The government may draw from this list to impose additional tariff countermeasures on imports from the U.S., if the current U.S. tariffs are maintained or new tariffs are announced.
The consultation on the additional list of goods gave all interested members of the public the opportunity to provide input. The consultation ran from March 4, 2025, to April 2, 2025. Thank you to everyone who participated.
Key questions for consideration
This consultation sought feedback on the proposed tariff measures, including the scope of measures, reasons for support or opposition, and potential impacts.
What's next?
The government will use the feedback to help inform decisions about the imposition of proposed counter tariffs, including the scope of product coverage, to respond to the unjustified imposition of U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods.
While this formal consultation has now concluded, Canadians are welcome to share their ideas and comments with the Department of Finance at any time.
