Chief Warrant Officer – Canadian Joint Operations Command

Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) Robert Sullivan joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1994 as a member of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI). After completing basic training in Saint-Jean-Sur-Richelieu, QC and Battle School in Wainwright, AB, he was posted in April 1995 to the 1st Battalion PPCLI at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Calgary.
During the next seven years he remained with the 1st Battalion and completed several exercises, as well as the Winnipeg floods and operational deployments to Bosnia in 1997 and Kosovo in 1999. With the closure of CFB Calgary he was posted with the 1st Battalion to CFB Edmonton. In 2000 he was promoted to Master Corporal and acted as an instructor on numerous courses in Wainwright and Gagetown. In 2002, he accepted an occupational transfer to Airborne Electronic Sensor Operator (AES Op) and was posted to the Canadian Forces Air Navigation School at 17 Wing Winnipeg to complete his basic Wings training. In 2003, upon obtaining his wings, Corporal Sullivan was posted to 423 Maritime Helicopter (MH) Sqn in Shearwater, NS, where he flew on the CH-124 Sea King. Promoted to Sergeant in 2006, he was posted to 406 Maritime Operational Training Squadron as a flight instructor where he remained until he was posted back to 423 (MH) Sqn as a Warrant Officer (WO) in 2009.
In 2011, he attended the year-long French course and upon completion was posted back to 406 Squadron as the AES Op Senior Instructor. In 2013, he was promoted to Master Warrant Officer and posted to the Maritime Helicopter Standards and Evaluation Team in Shearwater. In 2014 he was selected to attend advanced leadership training at the Senior Noncommissioned Officer Academy in Montgomery, Alabama, and was then posted to Ottawa under the Chief of Force Development, working in the Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) Governance section. In 2015, MWO Sullivan had the pleasure of being the Canadian Forces Station Alert Station Warrant Officer for six months, enjoying all the Arctic had to offer.
CWO Sullivan was promoted to his current rank in June 2016 and was posted to 402 Squadron as the Squadron CWO. In Sept 2018 he was selected to be the Air Task Force – Iraq CWO in Kuwait. Upon his return to Canada, in July 2019, he was posted to CFB Bagotville as the 2 Wing CWO, where he was honoured to be part of the Air Force’s Air Expeditionary Wing, “the Spearhead of the RCAF”. In July 2021, CWO Sullivan was posted back to the National Capital Region as the Strategic Joint Staff (SJS) CWO.
In July 2023, CWO Sullivan assumed his current position as the Command Chief Warrant Officer for the Canadian Joint Operations Command (CJOC).
He has been attach posted to HMC Ships St John’s, Athabaskan, Halifax, Iroquois and Toronto and has amassed more than 1800 flight hours aboard the mighty Sea King.
CWO Sullivan is married to his amazing wife Yan, and he has 2 children, Nathan and Abigail.
