Chapter 1 - Foreword

A-MD-154-000/FP-000

Purpose

  1. The purpose of this manual is to direct, assist and guide Health Care Providers in the review and evaluation of medical conditions and, when so indicated, the assignment of specific employment limitations. It also provides the Chain of Command (including the Commanders of the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN), the Canadian Army and the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and their respective staffs), employment and training authorities, Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members, and others, with a compendium of direction and guidance pertaining to Canadian Armed Forces Medical Standards. This will be accomplished through a comprehensive, hyperlinked listing of those policies, publications and related documents applicable to Canadian Armed Forces Medical Standards and related areas.

General

  1. Over the years advances in the diagnosis and knowledge of medical conditions can have an impact on their treatment and resulting limitations. Medical policies and procedures have become less exclusionary and more individualized. Each case is now considered on its own merits although past experience can often provide useful insights. This approach should in no way adversely affect operational capability. Rather, it should result in the provision of better medical advice and actually enhance this capability.

Authority

  1. This manual is issued under the authority of the Chief of the Defence Staff.

Responsibility

  1. The production and maintenance of this manual is the responsibility of the Surgeon General, except for those areas dealing with Task Statements and minimum Medical Standards which are the responsibility of the Occupation Authority in consultation with respective Occupation Advisors. Comments regarding the contents of this publication and/or suggestions for changes should be forwarded through normal channels to Canadian Forces Health Services Group Headquarters (CF H Svcs Gp HQ), Attention: Directorate of Medical Policy (D Med Pol).
