Note: Experienced Air Defence Technicians may be retained under old standard of V4, CV3, providing performance is satisfactory.
Footnotes:
1. Same cycloplegic standards as for restricted pilots and other aircrew.
2. The medical standards shown is for initial assignment to the MOSID (COATS Sub-component) occupation. An applicant with a medical category below this standard but not below V4 CV3 H4 G4 O4 A5 may be accepted for enrolment with employment limitations providing any existing medical condition will not be aggravated by military service. CF medical standards are detailed in A-MD-154-000/FP-000.
3. A higher medical standard may be applied based on job requirements.
4. Except for those (MOS ID) MOC 32 in operational roles.
5. Cyclopegic standards for restricted pilot and other aircrew apply.
6. Not all V3 initial applicants will meet the visual requirements for CAF diving. Only those divers who see 6/30 or better binocularly (using both eyes), are correctible to V1, have no disqualifying underlying eye disease and N8 or better (in best eye) on near vision testing meet trade standards. All initial candidates must be examined by an Optometrist/Ophthalmologist within 12 months of the Part 2 of the PHA. See UMG 100-01 for additional information.
7. Some G3 and/or O3 initial applicants may meet the requirements for CAF diving duty. A G3 and/or O3 initial applicant may be considered on a case-by-case basis if the assigned MELs are not contrary to CAF diving duty. Final determination will be made by a Consultant in Diving and Submarine Medicine in conjunction with D Dive S.
8. Not all G3 and/or O3 initial applicants will meet the requirements for CAF submarine duty. A G3 and/or O3 initial applicant may be considered on a case-by-case basis if the assigned MELs are not contrary to CAF submarine duty. Final determination will be made by a Consultant in Diving and Submarine Medicine and CANSUBFOR.
9. For those members who have an O3 medical category, who have either been enrolled into the MOSID(s) or who have undergone an AR/MEL from O2 to O3, prior to 01 April 2016, these personnel are grandfathered into the MOSID(s) at their current rank and for any future promotions within the MOSID. For new enrollees or VOT/COTs after the 01 April 2016, O2 will be the new standard. For those members who are already in the occupation prior to 01 April 2016 and who are subsequently assigned a change in medical category from O2, an AR/MEL will be required.
10. MOSID 00343: Non-Destructive Testing Technician, Visual Acuity Standards
11. A legacy provision applies to BIO officers who were enrolled in the MOSID prior to 1 April 2026. If currently serving BIO officers are unable to meet the Air Factor 4 (A4) standard following medical screening and medical file review, they may be retained at A5 for the duration of their service in the occupation, including eligibility for promotion. Effective 1 April 2026, the required Air Factor for all new enrollees and VOT/COT applicants will be A4. Members retained at A5 who subsequently experience a medical change will require an AR/MEL in accordance with DAOD 5019‑2 to determine continued suitability for BIO employment under the updated standard. For authoritative guidance on Air Factor and aircrew medical standards, refer to AMA Dir 100‑01.
- Corrected near visual acuity at 30 cm: J2/N5 (may be corrected to J2/N5 in one or both eyes)
- Note: Near vision should be confirmed by optometry assessment prior to enrollment.
