Managers : Your Role in Mapping Blitz 3
November 17, 2020 - Defence Stories
As you know, Mapping Blitz 3 is underway. Director Civlian Classification and Organization (DCCO) is updating DND job positions by mapping them to the applicable standardized job description (SJD) (accessible only on the National Defence network), as mandated by Treasury Board (accessible only on the National Defence network) and our Deputy Minister.
SJD’s make sense – they do not change the day-to-day work of employees, they only change the way the work is described in broader terms. SJDs are fair and transparent, and ensure that employees at the same level have comparable work and responsibilities and pay, regardless of their department.
This work will continue until 90% of positions are mapped to SJDs, and there is still a lot of work to be done. DCCO takes most of the work off your hands, so managers can focus on leading their teams and achieving SSE outcomes.
Managers simply need to:
- Review and confirm that the job descriptions applied by DCCO accurately reflect the work assigned to the employees.
- Give a copy of the updated job description to the employee and clearly communicate the expectations of the job to them, linking it to the content of the SJD. Managers must also address any new tasks or tasks that are no longer required.
- Return the signed attestation report indicating your agreement with the selected SJD.
- Discuss any outstanding issues with your Classification Officer.
If you are staffing a position that was previously vacant, or if you disagree with the SJD that DCCO applied, select the more appropriate SJD and submit it to E-Class (accessible only on the National Defence network) to be changed.
As well, if you are assigning new tasks, or removing tasks from an employee, you must validate that the SJD used for the position still reflects the work being done. If it doesn’t, simply select a different SJD from the Civilian Job Library (accessible only on the National Defence network) and submit it to E-Class (accessible only on the National Defence network). This must be done within six months of the change.
