SMSRC’s Restorative Engagement Program Unveils New Flexible Options for Defence Representatives
March 5, 2024 - Defence Stories
The Sexual Misconduct Support and Resource Centre (SMSRC) is launching new participation options for Defence Representatives (DRs) in its Restorative Engagement (RE) program. These will allow more Defence Team members to participate and for the program to be more responsive to the requests for engagement of individuals affected by sexual misconduct (class members).
The SMSRC's RE program is streamlining its options for participation to make a bigger impact aligned with its commitment to CAF-DND Sexual Misconduct Class Action Settlement's delivery. The new DR participation options will also ensure access for a broader range of Defence Team members, with certain that are targeted to upper ranks and positions.
New Options
The first option involves full-time participation over 8 consecutive weeks starting in May 2024. This option is open to CAF members and DND public service employees of all ranks and levels.
The second option involves full-time participation for 2 weeks at the beginning and end, with intermittent reflective learning sessions and engagements with class members over 5 to 6 months. This option is also open to CAF members and DND public service employees of all ranks and levels and is expected to launch in June 2024.
The third option consists of 6 virtual reflective learning sessions, class member engagement sessions and debriefs, and 2 virtual action planning sessions over the course of 6 to 8 months. Launching in June 2024, this option is for Colonel/Captain(N), Senior NCM ranks and EX-01/EX minus 1 levels.
The fourth option consists of 3 virtual reflective learning sessions, participation in either a learning circle with a small group of class members over several sessions and/or with other DRs, and a final action planning session. It includes participants of General Officer/Flag Officer rank/ EX-02 level and above, launching in June 2024.
All options require participation in small groups with other DRs (6 to 8 per cohort) and are facilitated by restorative practitioners. During their participation, DRs can expect to:
- read, reflect on, and discuss different resources on the causes, impacts, and systemic nature of sexual misconduct and CAF/DND culture;
- identify, understand, and challenge your own assumptions and biases about sexual misconduct and what is required when sexual misconduct happens;
- practice self-reflection and awareness of your individual and collective experience and roles within the organization and its culture;
- listen to, acknowledge, respond to, and learn from what CMs choose to share;
- integrate their learning and contribute to culture change in real time with meaningful, concrete actions.
