Generic Task Statement - Cadet Activity (Employment-Course-Exchange)
Activity Requested: Cadet Leadership and Challenge Course Length: 6 Weeks
Cadet Summer Training Centre: Rocky Mountain Alberta
General: Cadet activities occur in a wide variety of geographic locations and environmental conditions. The following tables describe the physical factors associated with the selected activity (Course-Exchange). The stress factors are indicative of the circumstances and conditions under which the cadets must be capable of performing his/her duties.
Using these factors as guidelines, medical personnel should determine whether a cadet is medically fit to perform or to be trained to perform the following tasks (physical factors) or is medically able to adapt to the particular conditions (stress factors).
Physical Factors
1. Must be able to perform marching in formation without stopping for 15 minutes daily and participate in parades duration of 60 minutes.
2. Must be able to undertake and perform the Cadet Fitness Test (running, long jumps, sit-ups and pushups. (We need to know how many, and time to do sit ups and all others test).
3. Must be able to participate in regular PT classes and group sports at other than own pace.
4. Must be able to safely perform duties in or close to water (swimming and canoeing).
5. Must be able to participate in overnight camping/bush exercise located greater than one hour from camp and medical facilities.
6. Under supervision, must be able to participate in handling and firing a Daisy Air Rifle.
7. Must be able to participate in civic tours and visits.
8. Must be able to do multi-day hikes with a 30 lb pack at high elevations (over 3,000 feet), must deal with heights, rock climbing. Must be able to kayak and canoe in glacier waters. Performing at these higher elevations may cause problems for asthmatics. Cadet may be gone 3 to 4 days and will be eating rations which could be problematic for a diabetic. They could be 2 to 3 hours from a medical facility.
Stress Factors
1. Must be able to cope with the stress of being away from home.
2. Must be able to live in communal barracks and close quarters.
3. Must be able to perform duties with less sleep than normally accustomed to.
4. Must be able to perform in team environments and meet deadlines.
5. Must be able to perform duties with the following medical support:
- CSTC Medical facility staffed with RNs only;
- Access to physician is at local clinic 45 minutes away.
- Has limited medical facilities. This may cause difficulties for a cadet who has training limitations or is on treatment.
- 911 responses are 45 minutes to CSTC.
- Acute care hospital is 90 minutes away.
- CSTC is located at 4,500 feet above sea level where normal morning temperatures range between 5-10 C. Climate is pleasant. Lots of trees, grass etc which may affect those with environmental allergies. When training on the glacier, canoeing or hiking, travel is up to 3 hours from a medical facility; if med evac is required it is 1 hour away even in good weather.
6. Must be able to travel as a passenger via any mode of transportation.
