Cadet Administrative and Training Orders (CATOs)


National Tall Ship Deployment

1. In addition to Tall Ship support provided to selected SCTEs, the CF sponsors an annual National Tall Ship Deployment. Dates of the deployment are promulgated annually in Annex A to this order. The programme itself is administered by Pacific Region on behalf of NDHQ/D Cdts.

Selection

2. Regional vacancies for the National Tall Ship Deployment (NTSD) are promulgated in Annex A to this order. Selection criteria for cadets are included in Annex B to this order. Nominations are to be forwarded to Pacific Region HQ (info NDHQ/D Cdts) to arrive not later than 20 July annually.

3. Pacific Region is authorized to employ up to two CIL(S) officers of Lt(N) rank or below for a maximum of 28 days each in support of the deployment. Pay for these two officers is to be charged to 2278CS 07A6 01138 FAA 43.

Finance/Administration

4. Transportation. Regions are to arrange transportation for cadets and CIL officers involved in the deployment. Travel costs are to be charged to 2278CS 07A6 02110 FAA 43. Service Air is to be utilized to the maximum extent possible. Cadets are to travel in uniform.

5. Pacific Region is responsible for ensuring that ground transportation is provided to meet arriving cadets, deliver them to the deployment ship, and return them to the departure airport.

6. Cadets are to draw clothing listed in CF scale D08-112 from their support base prior to departure from home regions. In addition, cadets are to have in their possession their normal uniform issue. The following equipment is also required:

  1. sleeping bag;
  2. flashlight with spare bulb/batteries;
  3. toiletries as required;
  4. laundry soap;
  5. paper, pen/pencil;
  6. seaman's knife and spike;
  7. plastic bags (to keep possessions dry at sea);
  8. long underwear;
  9. gloves;
  10. rubber sea boots;
  11. good civilian clothes; and
  12. civilian relaxed clothing.

7. Cadets should not bring unnecessary gear. Space is at a premium aboard this ship and room for storage of luggage/chests is not available. Cadets should transport their gear in a duffle bag.

8. Training Bonus. Cadets taking part in the deployment are paid a Training Bonus of $40 per week for a maximum of three weeks. Pacific Region is to arrange payment on completion of the deployment using financial code 2278CS 07A6 01213 FAA43.

9. Medical/Dental services are to be provided to cadets only in emergency circumstances. Bills for such emergency care are to be forwarded to Pacific Region RCO for payment. CFAO 35-3 and QR&O 35.06 are applicable.

10. Training Standards contained in A-CR-CCP-002/PT-001 are to be employed during the deployment. Successful completion of the employment entitles cadets to the Tall Ship proficiency badge.
