Practicing UXO Safety on the Tsuu T’ina Nation Reserve, Alberta

From 1908 to 1998, the Canadian Forces conducted training operations on the Tsuu T’ina Nation reserve close to Calgary, Alberta. The former Harvey Barracks, Practice Lands, and Sarcee Training Area were used as practice ranges and training areas. Manoeuvre trainings were carried out using practice bombs, land and air launched rockets, grenades and various other munitions.

A lot of work has been done to clean the old training areas and to get rid of unexploded explosive ordnance (UXO). UXO is the term for military explosives that were used but failed to function properly.

The UXO Program will continue to work closely with the Nation as lands are developed.

If you see something that could be UXO, do not touch it! If UXO is disturbed, it could explode and cause serious injury or death. Leave the area and call your local police.

The following are examples of unexploded explosive ordnance (UXO).

Large UXO resting on rocks
Small blue and silver UXO resting on rocks
Small UXO in the dirt
  • Don’t touch it!
  • Remember the location and leave the area.
  • Call 911.
