Why this study

The research looks at the education and job status of people living with activity limitations in Canada. It compares their experiences to those of people without activity limitations.

What we did

Using data from the 2021 Census, the research compared adults with and without activity limitations and looked at:

  • their highest level of education completed
  • how many had jobs or were unemployed, and
  • how much money they earned from work

What we found

When looking at education, this research found that:

  • fewer adults with activity limitations had university degrees compared to those without
  • more women+ with activity limitations had university or college education than men+ with activity limitations

When looking at employment, this research found that:

  • employment was lower for those with activity limitations
    • the gap was the smallest for those with university degrees
  • unemployment was higher for adults with activity limitations
    • the biggest gap was for those with no certificate, diploma, or degree
  • both men+ and women+ with activity limitations earned less than those without activity limitations

What it means

This study found that adults living with activity limitations have lower education levels than those without. This may lead to lower income, fewer job opportunities, and higher unemployment. These results could help the Government of Canada support policies and programs to address the challenges faced by Canadians living with activity limitations.
