Backgrounder

The New Horizons for Seniors Program is a federal grants and contributions program that funds projects that empower seniors in their communities and contributes to improving seniors’ health and well-being.

Canada has announced an investment of $1,316,318 to fund 61 community-based projects to support seniors in Calgary, Alberta. This funding was awarded through the 2021–22 New Horizons for Seniors Program call for proposals for community-based projects.

Calgary

Power of Seniors – $22,000 – Church of God East Indian Fellowship

The organization will purchase musical instruments/equipment for seniors  to learn/teach in class held at the church in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Motivational Socio-health Behaviour Promoting Independent Living – $25,000 – Community Transcultural Support Services

Seniors involved with the organization will participate in motivational socio-health activities, such as exercise and self-care, in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Parkinson's Peer Mentor Program – $23,750 – Parkinson Association of Alberta

Seniors involved with the organization will organize a Parkinson's Peer Mentor Program: to reduce social isolation by providing clients with accessible support and to reach more people with Parkinson disease.

Supporting Autistic Seniors Socially Engage in their Community – $11,200 – Society for Treatment of Autism

Seniors involved with the organization will learn about autistic traits and gain skills in mental health, self-advocacy, and communication in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Increase capacity and support programs for vulnerable seniors – $19,776 – Bow Cliff Seniors

The organization will purchase an outdoor BBQ/kitchen and a mini floor cleaner for seniors to enjoy cultural presentations in comfort in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Heart to Heart Care – $25,000 – MPC Foundation

Seniors involved with the organization will create care packages for other seniors and participate in digital literacy workshops in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Peer Support Programs for Seniors – $25,000 – Sagesse

Seniors involved with the organization will offer programs to expand awareness of elder abuse, including financial abuse, in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Our Lives–Our Journey – $24,992 – Alberta Network of Immigrant Women (ANIW)

Seniors involved with the organization will interview and document stories from immigrant seniors with junior high students in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Going Home Program – $25,000 – Calgary Meals on Wheels

Seniors involved with the organization will deliver meals to seniors who recently returned from the hospital in order to promote volunteerism among seniors and other generations.

Bowness Social Connection & Learning Project – $25,000 – Bowness Community Association

Seniors involved with the organization will participate in group activities  in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Orchestrating a Vibrant Lifestyle & Healthy Mind – $25,000 – Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre Association

Seniors involved with the organization will hold educational and recreational seminars in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

The Tight Knot Connecting The Old And The Young – $18,333 – Canada Korean Broadcasting Society (CKBS)

Seniors involved with the organization will provide a variety of programs and information sessions  in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

The Tovertafel: Creating Connections in Long-Term Care – $14,475 – Mayfair Care Centre

The organization will purchase a Tovertafel  (interactive game console) to offer meaningful connection for vulnerable seniors in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Seniors Program – $7,500 – Bridgeland-Riverside Community Association (BRCA)

Seniors involved with the organization will create various recreational programs and activities in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Lawn Bowling - Learn to Bowl for Seniors – $25,000 – Rotary Park Lawn Bowls Club

Seniors involved with the organisation will participate in lawn bowling activities and/or coach participants. This is to achieve social participation, inclusion, volunteering, and healthy ageism.

Traditional Thinkers Circle – $25,000 – Mount Royal University

Seniors involved in the organization will engage elders by building a Traditional Thinkers Circle on campus  in order to engage seniors in the community through the mentoring of others.

Community Garden Project – $23,902 – Calgary Heritage Housing

Seniors involved with the organization will create community gardens to help give seniors a sense of purpose  in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Learning new skills, Combating Social Isolation and Loneliness – $24,865 – The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Calgary (House of Praise)

Seniors involved with the organization will conduct activities such as a visit to a museum, and workshops on social media and senior abuse in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Community Kitchen Project for Seniors – $25,000 – Kerby Centre

Seniors involved with the organization will attend 8-week cooking workshops in 6 groups where meals will be made by seniors in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

An Indigenous/First Nations Seniors Taxes and Benefits Project – $15,667 – Sunrise Community Link

Seniors involved with the organization will provide tax filing help and services focused on Indigenous/First Nations seniors in order to promote volunteerism among seniors and other generations.

Growing Seniors – $6,667 – LINKages

Seniors involved with the organization will increase volunteerism and facilitation skills, and create inter-generational programs in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Wee Read with Seniors – $17,960 – Calgary Reads

The organization will purchase Chromebooks, headsets and books to offer virtual reading sessions, to promote volunteerism in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

VIEW Efficacy Research and Train the Trainer curriculum development – $24,334 – WP Puppet Theatre

Seniors involved with the organization will undertake a research project and participate in arts programming in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Healthy Kitchen Fest and Collective Gardening – $23,656 – The Calgary Chinese Elderly Citizens' Association

Seniors involved with the organization will participate in cooking and gardening workshops and live Zoom program support via Zoom in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Digital Literacy, Digital Tech and Activities – $18,000 – Parkdale Nifty Fifties Seniors Association

The organization will purchase E-Readers, iPads, and a bridge scoring system to offer digital literacy and games in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Intergenerational Speaker Series – $21,000 – Call

Seniors involved with the organisation will hold Inter-generational Speaker Series sessions to decrease societal ageist views in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Healthy Ageing of Calgary Korean Seniors – $25,000 – Calgary Korean Seniors Association

Seniors involved with the organization will participate in various in-person activities and events in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

22/23 Monthly Screenings – $25,000 – THIRD ACTion Film Festival Limited

Seniors involved with the organization will attend monthly screenings and talks on topics such as age-positive living in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Circle of Men - Elder Abuse, Addiction and Mental Wellness Supports – $25,000 – Man Wave Movement

The organization will transfer outreach programs to virtual platforms to access rural and isolated seniors in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

The organization will hold financial literacy knowledge and skills sessions in a cohort setting in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Seniors involved with the organization will plan and hold various senior engagement and digital literacy programming in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

The organisation will connect with rural seniors associations while demonstrating their cultural heritage in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Seniors involved in the organization will run digital literacy workshops surrounding scams, and hold Zumba classes in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Sewing Engagement with Seniors – $25,000 – Filipino Calgarian Seniors Club

The organization will purchase sewing machines and materials to offer sewing classes in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Seniors involved with the organization will participate in various programs online and in-person in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Seniors involved with the organization will improve the classes provided, by purchasing better equipment and hiring professionals in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Senior Accessibility and Engagement Project - Alexa – $25,000 – Dashmesh Culture Seniors Society

The organization will purchase Alexa systems and load with Punjabi programs to continue to offer social interactions in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Senior Digital Ambassador Project 3.0 – $21,000 – Diversecities Community Service Association

Seniors involved with the organization will gain knowledge on digital literacy through workshops in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Between Generations Mentoring - Growing The Big Pen Pal Project – $20,000 – Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary and Area

Seniors involved with the organization will implement a pen pal project with written exchanges between youth and seniors in order to engage seniors in the community through the mentoring of others.

Seniors Working Together for a Shining Future – $25,000 – Global Pravasi Seniors Society

Seniors involved with the organization will participate in bi-weekly workshops on financial management and elder abuse in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Seniors for an Inclusive Community – $24,940 – North Calgary Cultural Association

Seniors involved with the organization will participate in intergenerational gardening programs and educational workshops in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Sudanese Seniors Digital Literacy – $18,500 – Calgary Canadian Sudanese Commmunity Association (CCSCA)
