Statement

December 5, 2022       Gatineau, Quebec      Employment and Social Development Canada

The Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, Marci Ien, and the Minister for Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion, Carla Qualtrough, issued the following statement to mark International Volunteer Day:

“On International Volunteer Day, we celebrate the talented and tireless volunteers in Canada and across the world who dedicate their time, energy and expertise to serve others. And on this day, we recommit to our continued efforts in promoting volunteerism across Canada.

“The volunteer sector in Canada continues to be among the sectors most affected by the pandemic. Not-for-profit organizations and charities alike are struggling to bring back the volunteer base that they once had, and that was so crucial to providing services and supports to fellow Canadians. Their care and compassion was essential for getting us through the pandemic and must continue to be a key force toward building the Canada that we all want.

“Volunteering is about using one’s skills selflessly, looking beyond one’s own circumstances to respond to the needs of others. At its core, volunteering allows one to simultaneously explore one’s passions, learn new skills, and become an advocate—all while giving back. That is why our government is investing in volunteer opportunities for youth to help further their skills, expand their personal and professional networks, and gain essential life experience needed to build successful careers.

“From coast to coast to coast, young people—including Indigenous youth, youth with disabilities and those from under-served communities—can become agents of change. Through initiatives like the Canada Service Corps (CSC) and the Enabling Accessibility Fund (EAF) Youth Innovation Component, thousands of young people will continue to take part in meaningful volunteer service opportunities to give back to their communities, devoting their time, imagination and dedication to making a difference in areas that matter to them and to their fellow Canadians.

“Volunteering is also key to achieving the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, essential as it is to improving social, economic and environmental conditions locally and nationwide. Volunteers help extend the reach of social services and support education for low-income and marginalized groups, and improve food security for all. Their contributions to Canada are immeasurable.

“On International Volunteer Day, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the millions of talented and dedicated volunteers everywhere. Canada recognizes the value of your contributions toward driving change and bettering our communities. Your dedication is helping to build a better future for all of us.”
