Backgrounder – Canada announces New Horizons for Seniors Program funding for projects in Kingston, Ontario

Backgrounder

The New Horizons for Seniors Program is a federal grants and contributions program that funds projects that empower seniors in their communities and contributes to improving seniors’ health and well-being.

Canada has announced an investment of $144,804 to fund eight community-based projects to support seniors in the Kingston area in Ontario. This funding was awarded through the 2021–22 New Horizons for Seniors Program call for proposals for community-based projects.

Kingston

Seniors Centre Without Walls – $2,667 – Seniors Association Kingston Region

The organization will offer a free conference calling system to bring seniors together to interact, discuss, learn, share, socialize, and listen to featured speakers.

Supporting Seniors – $14,000 – Kingston Lawn Bowling Club

The organization will replace the current lighting, screen doors and shelving, in order to provide seniors with a safe environment for lawn bowling and social activities.

Virtual Teaching of Tablet/Cell Phone – $21,667 – Christian Cultural Association of South Asians

Seniors involved with the organization will learn to use social media to promote social inclusion and to mitigate the effect of social isolation amidst the pandemic.

Triangle of Support for Seniors – $25,000 – Council on Aging

Seniors involved with the organization will participate in a Mr. Fix It program, peer support, the Elder Abuse Prevention Support Line and the Homework Helpline to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Senior Dress for Success Mentor Program for Women – $16,100 – Dress for Success Kingston

Seniors involved with the organization will facilitate workshops and mentor seniors to become financially independent and develop self-confidence.

Seniors with Disabilities Making Connections – $25,000 – Lifetime Circles

The organization will buy and distribute tablets, to allow seniors with disabilities to learn technology, connect with others and reduce isolation.

Community Outreach Certified Executor Advisor Network – $25,000 – Kingston Branch of the Certified Executor Advisor Network

Seniors involved with the organization will host information sessions on financial literacy to promote the awareness of elder abuse among seniors.

Mobile Y – $15,370 – YMCA of Eastern Ontario

Seniors involved with the organization will deliver fitness workshops and activities to promote the health and well-being of seniors.
