Backgrounder
The New Horizons for Seniors Program is a federal grants and contributions program that funds projects that empower seniors in their communities and contributes to improving seniors’ health and well-being.
Canada has announced an investment of $400,592 to fund 19 community-based projects to support seniors in Windsor, Ontario. This funding was awarded through the 2022–23 New Horizons for Seniors Program call for proposals for community-based projects.
Café des âges – $24,790 – Centre Francophone pour Immigrants de Windsor-Essex
Seniors involved with the organization will meet regularly with people of all ages for mutual mentoring to reduce social isolation and continue to familiarize themselves with technology.
Salut les aînés ! Un réseau intergénérationnel des amis des grands parents – $9,534 – Place du partage
Seniors involves with the organization will share their experiences with children and reinforce the positive ties that unite them, promoting social inclusion among seniors.
The Experience of 2SLGBTQIA+ Members in Long-Term Care Homes – $15,182 – Windsor Pride Community
Seniors involved with the organization will publish and issue a report to educate long-term care facilities about challenges faced by 2SLGBTQIA+ seniors on how to overcome these challenges.
Seniors Wellbeing Outreach Program – $24,459 – Active Care Response Team
Seniors involved with the organization will plan and organize workshops and activities, such as a walking club, socials, or bingo nights, to reduce social isolation and prevent senior abuse.
Lutte contre âgisme et maltraitance des ainés par Immigrants Ethnoculturels Africains Francophone – $16,867 – Immigrant Francophone Afrique Développement et Intégration
Seniors involved with the organization will share their experiences and discuss financial exploitation, in order to prevent senior abuse.
Among Friends – $24,972 – Ahwazian Arab Red Crescent
Seniors involved with the organization will participate in workshops in a classroom setting enabling them to learn about community supports and increase their engagement with the community.
Life is Art – $24,912 – Arts and Cultural Alliance of Windsor Essex County
Seniors involved with the organization will explore their hobbies and life memories and learn to express themselves through painting workshops and a series of painting exercises and relevant activities.
In-person and Virtual Cooking Together – $24,788 – Women’s Enterprise Skills Training of Windsor Inc.
Seniors involved with the organization will bring seniors and youth together to document and learn each other’s recipes with virtual and in-person cooking workshops to reduce social isolation.
Supporting Seniors in our Community – $23,043 – The Windsor Women Working With Immigrant Women
Seniors involved with the organization will host a series of virtual seniors programs containing an active learning component so seniors will have continual opportunities to develop new skills.
BIAWE Seniors Link – $20,667 – Brain Injury Association of Windsor and Essex
Seniors involved with the organization will plan and host programming for neurodiverse seniors to increase social engagement by improving access to core services, service providers and consultation.
Soup, Salad, Story Sharing and Seniors: Bringing Awareness to Financial Illiteracy and Senior Poverty – $24,895 – Arts Collective Theatre
Seniors involved with the organization will host a soup, salad and sharing program, which will include story sharing dinner events and workshops on financial literacy.
The Java Project: Addressing Social Isolation and Loneliness During COVID-19 and Beyond – $12,769 –Extendicare Southwood Lakes
Seniors involved with the organization will deliver Java music, memory and mentorship programs to reduce social isolation, support emotional well-being, and assist those living with dementia.
African/Black Senior Healthy Living – $21,054 – African Women Association of Windsor
Seniors involved with the organization will facilitate and participate in community events targeting black and African women to promote social inclusion among seniors.
AWE Inspiring Connections – $25,000 – Art Gallery of Windsor
Seniors involved with the organization will support and mentor other seniors and engage in artistic and educational activities to promote social participation and inclusion.
Seniors’ Digital Storytelling Project – $20,416 – Windsor Centre for Film, Digital Media and the Creative Arts
The organization will purchase filming equipment to allow seniors to digitally record their life and family stories in order to reduce social isolation among seniors.
Bringing Seniors and Students Together – $14,334 – India Diaspora Ekta Association
Seniors involved with the organization will share their life experiences and knowledge with students through volunteering, reading, tutoring, digital literacy, outings and physical exercise.
Celebration of Life – $25,000 – Gujarati Samaj of Windsor
Seniors involved with the organization will host activities ranging from information sessions to karaoke to meditation for newcomer seniors to help them navigate Canadian society and support services.
Intergenerational Music Hub for Seniors – $23,607 – Banwell Community
Church
Seniors involved with the organization will create and deliver music-based and story-sharing activities to promote inclusion, social participation and healthy aging.
Seniors Rock! – $24,303 – Verity Matters Inc.
Seniors involved with the organization will continue offering its existing webinars and video communication channel, which provide resources for seniors to prepare legal documents and socially connect.
