Video: For education, save early and finish ahead

Transcript

Allan Brown: I´m Alan Brown. And my oldest daughter is Annelise and she´s 24 now.

Annelise Duval: I´m a clinical dietician and I´m a graduate from the University of Ottawa´s program in nutrition. My mother is a family physician and my father is many things. He, he is a professional engineer and went back to university himself when I was just about to start university and finished his Bachelor in Education.

I remember my dad really helping me with my homework in mathematics and assisting me in that because he wanted me to feel very comfortable with the subject matter and to really be able to attain my full potential.

Allan Brown: We wanted our children to have the same kind of opportunities that we had when we left high school to make sure that if they were interested in a career they wouldn´t be held back financially.

Our kids were born before the, the Canada Education Savings Program came around. In 1998, with our financial planner that talked to us about RESPs, explaining how if you put money aside and the government would put in a 20% matching grant into the RESPs for children as well and that was a, a real incentive for us to save.

Annelise Duval: There´s no question about it that if my parents hadn´t put money aside for my, for my education, I wouldn´t be where I´m at today.

Allan Brown: I think every parent feels good when their children can eventually stand on their own and, and, and you know that you don’t have to worry about looking after them, that, you know, they´ve, they´ve grown up and, and they´re financially independent.

Annelise Duval: I would like to thank them very much for having decided to put money aside for me for my education. I hope to do the same for my child when the time comes.

Thanks dad.
