About Future Skills

Background

In February 2019, the Government introduced the Future Skills initiative. Future Skills:

  • includes a focus on underrepresented groups, so everyone can succeed
  • helps Canadians make decisions about the skills and training they need
  • drives innovation to help Canada’s employment and training programs meet future needs

Future Skills:

  • studies trends with a national or regional impact on workers
  • identifies emerging skills that are in demand now and in the future
  • develops, tests and evaluates approaches to help Canadians develop new skills
  • shares lessons on what works to improve Canadians’ access to employment and training programs that meet their changing needs

For decades, we have faced changes in the workplace. Climate change, new technologies and most recently COVID-19 have required us to adapt in order to succeed. We are also facing rapid change such as: automation, digitization, robotics, artificial intelligence, clean tech, biosciences and more. This affects every aspect of our lives and can drive uncertainty and worry for many. However, these advancements also present extraordinary opportunities to improve everyone’s quality of life. Future Skills is part of the Government’s plan to help jobseekers, workers and employers better understand how skills in the workplace are changing – now and into the future. It also improves Canadians’ access to quality training to adapt and succeed. Future Skills encourages collaboration across sectors, innovative thinking and taking action in the face of global change. The Future Skills Council, a diverse group of leaders from across sectors, identified emerging skills and workforce trends, common priorities and concrete areas for action. The Future Skills Centre, an independent innovation and applied research centre tests and evaluates innovative approaches to skills assessment and development. It identifies emerging skills needs and generates evidence of what works to help Canadians develop needed skills. Future Skills positions Canada at the forefront of innovative thinking to transform skills programming. It is helping Canadians make informed training decisions, access quality training, so they can get and keep good jobs.

The Future Skills Centre

In February 2019, the Government announced the launch of the Future Skills Centre. The Future Skills Centre is an independent innovation and applied research centre.

  • The Future Skills Centre conducts research to find emerging skills trends.
  • It has supported over 195 innovation projects across Canada.
  • The research and projects help to better understand what works for different people in different situations.

The Future Skills Centre has the following objectives:

  • improve knowledge of skills needed in the workplace now and into the future. This helps Canadians to make training decisions
  • develop and test new ways to help workers recognize the skills they have and train people; and
  • share information on in-demand skills and new training methods to inform future programming

The Future Skills Council

The Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion appointed 15 members to the Future Skills Council. The Future Skills Council advised on emerging skills and workforce trends. It aimed to help Canadians have access to the tools they need to learn new skills.

In 2020, the Council published a report called "Canada – A Learning Nation". The report set out priorities that shape the work of Future Skills.

The Council members’ tenure ended in June 2021.

The Future Skills Office

The Future Skills Office is a part of Employment and Social Development Canada. The Future Skills Office:

  • shares recommendations from the Future Skills Centre and the Future Skills Council
  • helps to shape policies and programs that respond better to Canadians’ changing needs

To do so, it works with other federal departments and with provinces and territories. It also works with the Forum of Labour Market Ministers.
