Subject:
Saskatchewan Advantage Grant for Education Savings Waiver of Repayment Form.
Purpose
To inform Registered Education Savings (RESP) Promoters of the Saskatchewan Advantage Grant for Education Savings (SAGES) Waiver of Repayment Form.
Background
The SAGES grant must be repaid when RESP contributions are withdrawn, unless the beneficiary is eligible for an Educational Assistance Payment (EAP) or the withdrawal of contributions is made to correct an RESP over contribution.
In some instances, a subscriber may experience undue hardships in the event of a SAGES grants repayment. In such instances, the Saskatchewan Minister of Advanced Education may waive the requirements for repayment of SAGES grants to avoid undue hardship.
Examples of undue hardship:
- Extraordinary event that led to bankruptcy.
- Extraordinary illness – a severe illness requiring prolonged hospitalization or recovery. The illness would, create an undue hardship due to expenses related to: specialized medical equipment; travel for out-of-province/country treatment; out-of- country medical emergency; and/or medications.
- Catastrophic event – uninsured damage to property by an unforeseen event.
- Other situations that may be deemed as acceptable, as determined by the Saskatchewan Minister of Advanced Education.
Timeline for requesting Waiver of Repayment
A subscriber must submit a completed form and supporting documents to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Advanced Education within 12 months of the RESP contribution withdrawal date.

User Guide
The RESP Provider User Guide is currently being revised to reflect the addition of the form. Promoters and Trustees will be notified when the User Guide is revised.
