Notice #723 – One millionth Canada Learning Bond recipient

Information Bulletin

Number:
CESP/PCEE-2017/18-003-723
Date:
June 14, 2017
Subject:
One millionth Canada Learning Bond recipient

Purpose

The purpose of this bulletin is to inform you that the Government of Canada has paid the Canada Learning Bond (CLB) into a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) for the millionth beneficiary.

Background

Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) has reached an important milestone in its work to raise awareness of the benefits of early education savings in RESPs, and increase take-up of the federal education savings incentives. As you know, the CLB provides up to $2,000 in an RESP to help Canadians start saving for a child’s post-secondary education. Moreover, no personal contributions are required to receive the incentive.

In May 2017, ESDC paid the CLB into an RESP for the millionth beneficiary. This means that one million Canadian children from low-income families will be better able to afford post-secondary education.

Studies indicate that education savings can help strengthen a child’s aspirations of pursuing a higher education and graduating. As such, receiving the CLB will help Canadian youth reach their full potential. This is just one reason to celebrate the CLB.

Help spread the word

To highlight this important milestone, as well as promote the benefits of using RESPs to save for postsecondary education, ESDC will be making use of its social media platforms in the coming weeks to help raise awareness of the CLB. Below are links to the messages that have been tweeted to date.
