“As an Operational Meteorologist, I am constantly learning about the weather and its impacts on society.”

Meet Juliana, an Operational Meteorologist who has been working in the Newfoundland and Labrador Weather Office for the past six years. Juliana has a true passion for weather and is motivated by her desire to learn and understand the atmosphere and the science behind it. She is constantly learning new techniques to forecast and new ways to interpret satellite imagery and radar data in order to better understand storms and the atmosphere.

One of her greatest memories to date as a Meteorologist has been forecasting some of the most intense storms to hit Newfoundland in years, such as the 2020 Snowmaggedon. Parts of Newfoundland experienced blizzard conditions for 18 straight hours. St. John’s International Airport broke its historic daily snowfall record with 76.2 cm and had to stay closed for six days. Nearby, Mount Pearl and Paradise reported 90 cm of snow over 28 hours.

Did you know that snowmaggedon made Canada’s top 10 weather stories of 2020? Check it out!
